Breck Kent was born, raised, and lived his entire life in New Jersey. At a young age he started to wander around the local woods, fields, and streams observing and collecting every imaginable kind of critter, usually bringing them home to share with his family.
Upon graduation from Madison High School, he majored in Biology/PreMed at The King’s College, and later did graduate work in Geology at Columbia University. After working one year as a Curator of Science at the Morris Museum, he started teaching Earth Science and Biology in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, where he remained for 33 years.
While working at the Morris Museum, Breck spent his first paycheck on a camera, and started to document what he observed in the natural world. In 1976 he joined the Animals Animals photo agency to represent his photos commercially around the World. In 1977 Breck was ranked as one of the Top 10 Nature Photographers in the World by the Photographic Society of America. In 1988 the Educational Press Association of America awarded him the Distinguished Achievement Award.
Over the years photography has afforded Breck many opportunities to travel Worldwide, having been on every continent and he has swam in every ocean, including the Southern Ocean at Antarctica on New Years Day, 1999.
